Daily Healing Routines for a Healthy, Energetic You!

The constantly changing health world is leading us to search more for foods and exercises that are healing, an attribute that purifies the mind, body and spirit.

Yoga, healing cuisines and superfoods such as turmeric are a few parts of the healing lifestyle, but learning how to combine as many wellness savers as possible into everyday routines is the key to holistic health.
Health, fitness and productivity experts have helped to create simple and effective daily healing routines, including recipes, for your morning, afternoon and evening.

Morning Routine: Turmeric Tea + Neck Stretches

Incorporate super ingredients such as turmeric into a morning tea or juice. Turmeric is a spice and medicinal herb in the ginger family that is commonly used in India. It helps prevent cancer, alleviate headaches and lessen depression.
According to Celebrity Private Chef Mark Bailey, celebrities love morning teas with turmeric because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Living in a city full of celebrities, NYC Restaurateur Pamela Elizabeth, owner of vegan restaurant Blossom on Columbus, says:
“My favorite super ingredients to use in my restaurant’s healing teas are chamomile and ginger because of their immune system and beauty benefits.”

 2. Do Neck Stretches.

Doing neck stretches before work will relax muscles and provide a clearer mind. According to NYC Physical Therapist Karena Wu, doing these three neck stretches for at least 30 seconds before work will wake up the mind and body:
  • Scalene Stretch

    Bend head down toward your left ear and keep your neck straight. Left hand holds onto opposite (right) temple to pull head down toward the ear with a little overpressure. Do not bend the trunk, only your head to your ear.
  • Upper Trapezius Stretch

    Bend your head down toward your left ear, but now rotate your face toward the opposite (right) shoulder. Head is also slightly bent forward in front of the trunk. Same side (left) hand holds onto the opposite (right) temple.
  • Levator Scapula stretch

    Turn your face to your left armpit, about 45 degrees. Bring your face down toward your armpit like you are looking down at it.  Take your left hand over the top of the back your head and pull your face down toward your armpit with overpressure.  Do not bend your trunk, only your head to your armpit.

Drinking greens in the middle of your workday helps with energy and digestion. Juicing also helps with skin and hair improvement, as well as weight loss.
Fast casual vegan restaurants offer juices with spinach, beets, coconut water, almond milk and lemon zingers that you can grab on the go. Find your nearby spot to grab an afternoon healing drink.

4. Take Breaks.

To increase productivity midday, remember love, screen breaks and soothing sounds according to IT tech expert Aaron Ross. He says:
“Calling my wife to say hello, working on the computer for one hour at a time then taking a break, and listening to soothing sounds all help boost my productivity.”

Evening Routine: Healing Cuisines + Body Tapping

5. Cook a meal that is meant to heal.

Ayurveda, vegan, vegetarian, macrobiotic or raw foods are the five, and only, healing cuisines, according to Health Expert Richard Goldstein, owner of Natural Epicurean Academy of Culinary Arts.
Goldstein says:
“These cuisines have been a part of the human experience for thousands of years. Societies have long used food and herbs to foster health. It’s only in the last two centuries, as western society began extracting supplements and developing processed foods, generally bringing a reductionist approach to health, that food ceased to play its essential healing role.”

6. Do Evening Yoga.

Goldstein also suggests to do some evening yoga moves to release all the day’s tension in the body. Body tapping is a dahn yoga move meant to release stagnant energy throughout the entire body.
Areas with more muscle such as the legs and back require harder taps, while areas without muscle, like the skull, require lighter taps. Body tapping before bed will provide a better night’s sleep and a more refreshed morning. Then, a new round of healing routines can commence.

Bonus: Turmeric Tea Recipe!

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 generous teaspoon of turmeric
  • Pinch of salt
Instructions:
  1. Boil 2 cups of water and 1 generous teaspoon of turmeric and pinch of salt the night before.  Leave out during night.
  2. Warm in the morning and drink.  Optional to add ghee before drinking.
