7 Habits That Aren’t As Healthy as You Think

image

If you want to improve or maintain your health, you might be surprised to learn that you’re doing things — things you think are healthy — that get in the way of such goals. You may believe your habits are ideal due to the health trend of the moment or widely-embraced studies that seem to suggest so, but just the opposite may be true. Here are seven habits that you may think are healthy which, in reality, are not at all.

1. You’re always doing a detox
Detoxing, which typically includes juicing but isn’t limited strictly to that way of eating, often involves elimination of foods in an effort to purge toxins from your system. You might have engaged in a detox after a weekend of bad eating or in an effort to shed weight quickly before a big event. Unfortunately, both of those ideas are unhealthy. When practiced regularly, they may make you more inclined to eat poorly afterwards, now that the detox is over and your goal was temporarily met. Therefore, you may continually justify your bad eating habits with the notion that you’ll simply undo unhealthy dietary choices with a get-back-in-shape detox. While detoxes can flush toxins from your body, the reality is that continual engagement in this yo-yo process wreaks havoc on your health because you’re constantly subjecting your body to extremes with hardly any middle ground.
2. You juice all the time
Some people say juicing is great method of delivering nutrients to your body with more immediacy, and that it’s an easy way to obtain foods you otherwise wouldn’t enjoy or take the time to prepare. Others, however, claim that juicing prevents you from getting the full range of nutrients from foods, since it often leaves behind fiber-rich pulp. They also say that just one juice can vastly increase your caloric intake. For example, pineapple has about 83 calories per cup. To enjoy a juice made from fresh pineapple, you’d end up consuming more of the fruit to create one cup, which comes in at around 120 calories.
The general thought is that it’s best to provide your body with a range of foods and in a variety of forms: juiced, blended, steamed, baked, roasted, and so on. A strict juicing lifestyle has the potential to interfere with muscle mass, metabolism and nutrient absorption.

3. You exercise excessively
Unless you’re training for a marathon or are a pro-athlete, excessive gym time can be incredibly harsh on your body and mind. Not only can it result in serious muscle tears (beyond what normally occurs), but not taking it easy enough prevents your body from getting the internal repairs it needs.
Mentally, you need a break too. When I lost a great deal of weight, I admit that I became obsessed with the gym. I’m here to tell you that doing so — along with my less than healthy eating patterns — not only left me too thin, but drained my mind and my relationships. Fitness is important, but if it’s something you obsess about then you may be jeopardizing your physical and mental health.
4. You go on a diet
It’s my belief that going on a diet is more psychological than anything else; thinking in terms of going on a diet conveys a succinct start and end time that can lead to the return of unhealthy eating habits. Furthermore, many diets are filled with foods that are so limiting that you may experience significant setbacks if you fall off track even slightly. Diets are often full of deprivation and challenges that can get in the way of weight loss.
You can improve your mindset by couching your improved ways of eating in terms of a lifestyle change instead of being on a diet. Let go of the “d” word and focus on the fact that you’re doing something good for the long haul.
5. You drink too much wine
Many people tend to gravitate towards a glass of wine (or two) at the end of the day to relax. Or, they cling tightly to studies that indicate the health benefits of wine and end up going overboard. In that case, experts say that these findings shouldn’t be your green light to indulge in a bottle of red wine nightly. Instead, the recommended intake is a glass a day for women and two glasses daily for men. It’s no secret that too much alcohol can lead to headaches or risky behaviors that can harm emotional and physical health, so go easy on your intake.
Origins

6. Diet soda’s a part of your daily routine
If you reach for diet soda because the word “diet” sounds healthy and you enjoy the low or zero-calorie promise, you’re harming your health in the long run. They’re packed with unhealthy sugar alternativessuch as aspartame, which have been found to break down in the body with very unhealthy results. Dizziness, headaches and even brain tumors are said to be linked to ingestion of aspartame, which sweetens all of those diet sodas (and other diet products). Additionally, artificial sweeteners have been found to increase your food cravings, fueling your appetite for items that can throw weight loss or weight maintenance efforts off track.
7. You focus mostly on low-fat foods
Although eating low-fat foods has been ingrained in people’s heads as a healthy choice, this notion is fast becoming a thing of the past. Low-fat foods may not have as many calories, but they often make up for that so-called benefit by having a high sugar content or using artificial sweeteners which isn’t healthy. The bottom line is that your body needs fat to function optimally. At the very least, your body needs fat to absorb vitamins and nutrients. Therefore, it’s healthy to enjoy whole foods such as yogurts and milk, or to cook with extra virgin olive oils (instead of eating meals that only carry low-fat labels or omit healthy fats).

Keep Warm While Juicing By Adding These 3 Ingredients!

juicing tips
That time of the year is upon us. Yep, it’s getting colder and colder out there! If you’re anything like me you don’t like to give up on your juicing during the fall or winter, but some days the chill in your bones isn’t exactly motivating you to pour a nice cold glass of juice for yourself!
The good news is there are specific ingredients you can add to your juices to warm up your body temperature. You may even feel a nice warmth immediately as you drink some of these. I know I do!

1. Ginger

Since ancient times ginger root has been used as a warming remedy. Recent studies have found that one of ginger’s warming effects stem from its thermogenic properties, more specifically the warmth that is produced from metabolic processes going on in the body after it’s consumed.
This increase in your body’s metabolism also means an increase in the amount of calories you burn in a day. This means you get to warm up while shedding some extra weight! A good thing for many people around or after the holiday season!
Ginger also increases circulation in the body which helps you feel warmer during the cold times of the year.
Tips For Juicing With Ginger: It’s much easier to use fresh ginger and simply drop it into your juicer along with your other ingredients! If you don’t have access to fresh ginger you can also add it to your juice in its powder form. You’ll want to stir it well, seal it in a mason jar and shake it up, or mix your juice and the ginger powder together in a blender. This will help to better separate the powder so it doesn’t become clumpy in your juice.

2. Cinnamon

Chinese medicine uses cinnamon quite often for its warming properties as well as it’s circulatory benefits. The bonus of using cinnamon during the colder season is that quite a few holidays happen around the same time. Cinnamon makes a tasty addition to a holiday juice or smoothie! This delicious pumpkin spice smoothie uses both cinnamon and ginger!
Tips For Juicing With Cinnamon: You’ll be adding cinnamon in its powder form to your juices so you’ll want to either seal your juice and cinnamon in a mason jar and shake it up well, or add your juice and cinnamon to a blender together. I’ve tried stirring it up with a spoon several times, only to have my mouth covered in cinnamon powder! I was persistent and kept trying over and over again, but I wanted to save you the trouble and recommend you try the mason jar or blender method.

3.Cayenne Pepper

I probably don’t need to tell you that cayenne pepper is hot? Cayenne pepper’s warming abilities come from an active component contained inside named capsaicin. This compound has thermogenic properties similar to those found in ginger.
Tips For Juicing With Cayenne Pepper: You’ll want to start out with a really small amount of cayenne pepper! The stuff can be really hot! Like burn your mouth hot! It would be wise to begin with only a half teaspoon to a full teaspoon your first time.
Just like with ginger powder and cinnamon powder you’ll want to either seal it with your juice in a mason jar and shake it up, or add the juice and cayenne pepper to a blender to mix it all in well.

This warming ginger detox elixer would also be a great way to start your day during the chilly time of year!

Alkaline Recipe #185: The Smooth-Away Cellulite Juice

Smooth Away Cellulite Juice
Whenever I talk to people about their body, what they love and what they dislike, cellulite is always right up there at the top.
The thing that always surprises me is how powerless people feel when it comes to the cellulite on their body.
There is SO MUCH you can do to remove this stuff!
And today I’m sharing a simple, delicious juice with you that contains all of the best, most alkaline foods known to help smooth away cellulite and help the body to slim down.
The types of foods you want need to have one of three important properties:
  • Skin Strengthening Foods
  • Foods that Boost Blood Flow
  • And Diuretics that Ward Off Cellulite
If you can regularly consume meals that tick all of those boxes, you’re laughing. And guess what?
This delicious cellulite removing juice contains:
Skin Strengthening Foods:
Grapefruit
Spinach
Tomato
Carrot
MCT (see note on this below)
Blood Flow Boosting Foods:
Ginger
Cayenne Pepper
Diuretic Foods:
Cucumber
Celery
And it tastes AMAZING!

Smooth Away Cellulite Juice

Serves 2
Ingredients
  • 1/2 Big Red Grapefruit (peel removed)
  • 2 Large Handfuls of Spinach
  • 2 Tomatoes
  • 1 Carrot
  • 2 Tablespoons MCT (see note on this below)
  • 1 Cucumber
  • 2 Sticks of Celery
  • 1/2 Inch of Fresh Root Ginger
  • Pinch of Cayenne Pepper Per Person
  • Optional: coconut water or plain, filtered water to dilute to taste
Instructions
    1. First, in a (preferably masticating, slow, cold press juicer) juice the peeled grapefruit, spinach, carrot, tomatoes, cucumber, celery and ginger
    2. Pour the coconut or filtered water through the juicer to add the water and wash through any remaining juice in the juicer at the same time
    3. Stir this to mix the flavours, and then stir in the cayenne pepper
    4. For the MCT oils, this is basically a medium-chain triglyceride oil (saturated fat) – and I have included some notes on this below. If you have got an MCT supplement, such as Bulletproof’s Brain Octane Oil, just stir it in. If you don’t have this, either add in a tablespoon of melted coconut oil per person, or have a tablespoon of coconut oil off the spoon, washing it down with the juice!
This juice hits the cellulite in those three specific places, but is also highly alkaline, deeply rich in antioxidants and highly anti-inflammatory – so will rapidly assist in weight loss and the removal of unwanted stored fats.
Plus it tastes yum.
Alkaline Green Juice for Cellulite
Enjoy and let me know how it works for you!

PS. here’s the skinny on the saturated fat (MCT oil) I referred to above. Basically saturated fats have been proven to increase the metabolism, lower blood pressure, lower bad cholesterol (while raising good cholesterol), while at the same time strengthening the skin, reducing skin inflammation and giving the skin a soft, supple feel.
I have gone into lots of detail and included the scientific references on why saturated fats are GOOD not bad here.
But the short version is that the myth that saturated fats cause heart conditions has been disproven so impressively thoroughly. Not only are they NOT bad for you but they’re actually GREAT for you and so many of us are now chronically deficient.
Start getting in your omega 3s and your saturated fats (I personally believe coconut oil should be the basis of this) and you’ll really see and feel a difference.

A Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Treatment That Is Natural And Will Help Get Back Your Energy

This week on Tyler Talks, I have a compelling question about Chronic Fatigue: With so many dietary restrictions which must be accommodated, what exactly can you eat to help you on the road to recovery?
People with Chronic Fatigue tend to suffer a number of unpleasant symptoms, including disrupted sleep, urinary problems, weight fluctuations, nausea, bloating and constipation. Causes of Chronic Fatigue can be attributable to issues with digestion, blood pressure and various infections. As we already know, natural health can go a long way towards reducing the severity of illnesses and in some cases, can completely cure them.
Depending on the severity of the symptoms, a raw food diet, coupled with light, anaerobic exercise, can make life a lot easier for those with Chronic Fatigue. So what exactly can we recommend in terms of diet? Are some foods worse than others? Or can a raw food diet, including juicing, go a long way towards recovery?

14 Ways I Completely Changed My Life And So Can You

A few years ago my entire life changed, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I decided that I had reached a point in my life where I wasn’t happy and needed to make massive changes. I began a long process of understanding what it would take to experience massive success and become a magnet for all things good in life.
Addicted2Success was part of that journey, and so were a number of other great resources.
Below are my fourteen quick tips for turning your life around

1. Do a clean out of all your friends

I went through all my friends and asked myself one question, is this person helping me to succeed or bringing me down. If the answer was the later, I deleted them from my social media and my address book, and moved on. This might seem drastic but sometimes it’s the tough decisions that will help you achieve massive success. The only exception to this was that if someone proved that they were going to change, then I allowed them back in again. Doing this made me feel like I had control over my life again.
 2. Listen to audiobooks every single day
The one habit that started this whole transformation for me was listening to my very first audiobook, which happened to be “Tony Robbins Get The Edge.” I started by deciding that I needed to do some exercise and that walking around my neighbourhood would be a good start. I could often be seen walking on the main roads of Melbourne, in the middle of the night, listening to these audiobooks and looking very animated because they were literally addictive. These tapes taught me the information that school did not, they taught me the basic success principles that I was now going to live my life by.
 3. Start a LinkedIn page
For a long time, I avoided LinkedIn because I thought that people might bother me or that my privacy would be breeched. I have now learnt that if you are authentic and genuine online and have nothing to hide, tools like LinkedIn can become very powerful – read why here.
“LinkedIn is for your network what venture capital is for startups, it allows you to scale at a rate that you never thought was possible”

4. Remove negative media from your life

One of the best things I did was get back time in my day by not watching anymore TV and ditching the habit of watching or consuming any mainstream news. I replaced this wasted time with my new favourite hobby, reading Kindle books on my iPad. For many years, I was unable to read a lot of books because my eyes got tired from reading. Then I started reading on an iPad screen, which was much brighter and easier on my eyes. It was like discovering reading for the first time, and I begun to read anything from “Think and Grow Rich,” to books about Wall Street.

5. Start juicing and rebounding now

Green Juice - Vegie Girl - Urban Projuice Tim DenningAfter attending a Tony Robbins seminar, I learned about the alkaline diet and took up drinking cold press, green, juice every morning. Never have I felt so good and I now have all the energy to get me through the day. Gone are the headaches and rumbling stomachs because my body is finally nourished and alive again. If I suggest that you do one thing to turn your life around, it would be to take up the habit of juicing.
I also started using my net time (no extra time) by combining important mobile phone conversations with walks in the park. I found this to be very relaxing, and it made me very productive. I then added watching my favourite “Ted Talks” while rebounding on a mini trampoline. This practice helps clear my lymphatic system and is a great way to get me started in the morning.

6. Walk away from conversations that involve negative people

When I decided to go and work for a corporate organisation, I started my career in a very negative team. I would often come to work and hear my fellow teammates talking about how much they hated life and the company we all worked for. They could often be seen planning coups and talking about various conspiracies. This was the best lesson of my life! I got to see exactly how I didn’t want to be and why I would never settle for less again. Even now, if I am part of a conversation and it goes down a road that is not congruent with my beliefs, I remove myself. Doing this is such a blessing in disguise because I feel like I am in control and not like life is in control of me, or worse yet, somebody else.
 7. Don’t worry about the outcome of everything
Before I underwent this change is psychology, I used to try and worry about the outcome of everything. I use to think that I could always control the outcome. When I learnt that it was better just to have faith and know that every outcome happens for a reason, I had completely transformed for the better. When things that most people would consider to be major failures in life occurred to me, I would just shake it off and learn the lesson from it, knowing that every lesson was making me stronger and stronger – I adopted the phrase, “Fail Fast.”
 8. Have faith in yourself
Something that rejuvenated me was learning to have faith in myself. I began to play a game with myself and tried to be in situations where I had completely no idea. I remember being asked to look after a billion dollar relationship with a client and having absolutely no idea. I said yes because I knew this was a chance to learn. From there, I always said yes to things that I thought I was not ready for. I knew that when I wasn’t ready, it was time to grow. Tony Robbins seminar taught me that my strongest human need was growth, so I tried to feed this need as much as possible. Sure enough, the more growth I experienced, the more confidence I gained. This confidence led me to have faith in myself even when nobody else did.
 9. Travel the world more
For a long time, I believed that working myself to death was what was required to achieve massive success. While hard work is definitely required, working yourself to the bone will not do you any favours. I began to start travelling more and before I knew it, I had flown to more than eight destinations in the space of 6 months. I found that this travelling helped put my life in perspective and gave me new ideas. Whenever a new thought occurred about something I should be doing in business, I realised that it had come from when I was travelling. It’s easy to get lost in your own community, so get out there and see the world because one day you might not be around to see it.
10. Change your career
Most people fear change and the thought of trying another career is daunting to them. I began studying people’s LinkedIn profiles and looking at their various career paths. I saw one common pattern; almost none of the people I studied had actually done the same thing for their whole life. In fact, the ones that had reached the most success had usually taken a massive change in direction at some point in their life. I started to do the same with my own career and try new things out. I discovered that my network grew, and my inner circle of influence became stronger and stronger. Don’t be afraid of change ever!!!
I later started to play a game with job interviews. I purposely went and interviewed for jobs that were way out of my league that my education wouldn’t normally qualify me for. To my surprise, all the personal development and change of character became like a magnet. Everyone was offering me jobs that I could only dream of. When I asked them why the offered me the opportunity they told me that it was the confidence, attitude and way I went about things – who knew this was the most important thing.
Want to know something even more strange? One of the jobs I applied for I was unsuccessful at getting. About 12 months later one of my work colleagues was successful at getting the same role. I asked her to ask the manager why I didn’t get it, and she did. The answer they gave, we thought you were overqualified and would get bored easily. I was convinced that the reason I didn’t get it was experience, yet I was totally wrong. Always back yourself 1000% !
 11. Reach out to successful people
As a joke, one of my closest friends dared me to try and contact people within my organisation that most would consider to be unreachable. I began ringing CEO’s, Heads of, General Managers; anyone that I thought would see me as the lowest person in the organisation. To my surprise, I was able to get a meeting with every single one of them and talk to them about whatever I wanted. Never underestimate how much other people want to help you and share their advice. The act of doing this taught me about my beliefs and about people, which changed my perception of life.
 12. Give as much as you can
Giving was something that I was always told was important but I didn’t really know the power of. In the early days of business, I thought it was all about protecting your intellectual property and not telling anyone about your ideas. What I now know is that ideas are not worth anything unless you do something with them. Even if you have a great idea, most people are too lazy or too negative to bother trying to steal it from you. I now tell everybody about all my ideas, and I often find that it opens doors I never knew existed. People now see me as an ideas man because I share everything I know. You will never have all the information about a particular subject no matter how hard you try.
Information is so easy to find thanks to the Internet so share away. I even share my address book because everyone is searchable thanks to LinkedIn and Facebook.
 13. Attend more networking events
An easy way to expand your influence is to expand your network. I remember hearing a few weeks ago “your network equals your net worth.” A lot of people ask me where I get all my opportunities, my answer, they come from my network. I hear about things before anyone else because my network tells me about them. I do the same so now I have a mini “Pay It Forward,” game occurring within my network. Some of the best people I have connected with in the last few years I have met at networking events. No matter how exhausted I might be after work, I always try and attend events because it lifts my energy and opens my mind to ideas I haven’t thought of before.

14. Give everybody a second chance

Last but not least, I learnt to give everybody a second chance no matter what they had done. This forgiveness allowed me to see people’s weaknesses and understand that nobody is perfect. Giving in to accepting that no one is perfect has made others not expect me to be perfect. Nobody does anything to upset you on purpose; it’s how you’re interpreting it that is the issue.
So there, you have it, my top tips on how I turned my life around. So many people have asked me, and now you have all the knowledge that I had to do the same. Even if you only do 3 of these tips, I promise you, you will experience a change in your life for the good.
