Follow your dreams. We have all heard that inspirational saying before, right? But what does it really mean?
Following your dreams is really about following that creative inspiration or that heart desire that dwells within. It is about following a vision that you have for yourself and using it as a guide.
Dreams can be very powerful and can often lead us to our higher path, but the concept of following your dreams has been somewhat lost and misinterpreted in today’s society.
Today, we view following your dreams as having a goal or a task in mind and then setting out to achieve it against all odds. We are told that the harder we work and the more we fight for it, the closer we are going to get to creating our dreams.
There is very little focus placed on the quality of the journey and the focus becomes the end product. As long as you reach that end product or that end goal, you would have found success and your “dream”.
It is this mentality of going after your dreams that has caused a lot of people to feel stressed, depressed and even like a failure. It has also caused a lot of people to give up on following their dreams.
The reality is that following your dreams can start to become more like a nightmare, especially if you are confused about what “following your dreams” really means.
Following your dreams is not about chasing an end product or end goal. It is not about visualising and then trying to create that exact same visual in the physical world.
Why?
All of these are very limiting concepts and dreams are anything but limited.
Dreams are unlimited, they are full of twists and turns and secret passages. They are not rigid or fixed or locked in their ways, they are fluid.
Dreams follow our heart desires and ultimately what makes us feel good in the present moment.
Dreams are forever changing, ebbing and flowing along with the tide of your world. But too easily in this process, the ego-mind can get in the way and force us to become too fixated on the end goal.
Dreams are about following the inspiration of the moment and being open to what each moment has in store. It is about being flexible and open enough to realise when you need to change course or perhaps head in another direction.
Dreams are not about setting a limiting goal and then forcing yourself to have a one track mind in order to achieve it.
Dreams are ultimately never ending. They allow us to feel the joy in every single moment of every single day.
When we follow our dreams, we are essentially following our inspiration and our inner wisdom, and this can lead us to millions of different destinations.
Many years ago I had the dream of becoming an actor. I was able to turn this dream into a reality and it lead me to move from Australia to the USA.
When I got to the US however, my dream started to pull me in the new direction of writing. I followed that dream and here you are reading my writing today.
If I had been so fixated on my goal of acting, I never would have felt the pull to create or do something else. If I had been so limited on focusing on my acting career, I never would have discovered this other passion or side of me.
While there is nothing wrong with having a dream and going after it, you have to be open to where it takes you.
When you get fixated on just one thing, it limits you and draws too much of your energy away from the bigger picture. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, eventually it can leave you feeling burnt out, stressed and lacking passion.
Dreams are magical and are destined to take us places. When we follow our dreams and the inspiration that they give us, that is when true magic happens.
When you turn your dreams into a fixated goal however, they lose their dream-like quality and stop you from truly tapping into your heart’s desire.
So, by all means, follow your dreams, just don’t turn your dreams into a rigid, structured expectation. Instead, allow your dreams to become big, expansive and always-evolving.
