How Often Should You Wash Bedding

It might surprise you to learn that your bedding should not all be washed the same way and at the same time.

Cleaning your pillows, comforter, pillowcases, and sheets requires a different cleaning process, all of which have been laid out here for you in this simple bedding cleaning guide.

1. The Pillows

Are you making use of pillow protectors on your bedding? By utilizing a pillow protector you only need to wash the pillows three times this year. The better quality pillow protectors have zippers on one end and can easily be unzipped and removed to be cleaned. Remove the protector and wash monthly because dirt and oil from your face will soak into the material and eventually to the filling of the pillow itself.

If you are not making use of a pillow protector, you should wash the pillow in mild detergent once a month. Wash two pillows at the same time to balance the load in your washing machine.

2. Pillowcases and Sheets

Although this can be a matter of preference, you should be washing the pillowcases and the sheets at least weekly. Not only will this provide a fresh smell and clean look, the washing will remove dirt and oil that is a result of being in contact with your body.

If you notice any stains on the sheets or pillowcase, treat them before you place in the washing machine to allow the solvent to break down the stain. Always wash the sheets and pillowcases in cold water to avoid shrinkage.

3. Extra Blankets

When it comes to washing the extra blankets you use at night on your bed to keep warm, it is important to know how often that blanket is used. If the blanket sits folded on the edge of the bed most of the week not in use, washing every other month should be adequate.

If it is cold at night and you use that blanket frequently to stay warm, washing once a week or bimonthly should do the trick. Each blanket is made differently, so follow the washing instructions carefully on the tag. Newer blankets should be washed alone in case there is any color runoff during the wash cycle.

4. Duvet Covers and Comforters

One way to cut down significantly on how many times you wash the comforter is to use a cover. The cover protects the comforter from soiling and dirt. Using a cover allows you to only have to wash that comforter once maybe twice each year. The cover should be washed weekly.
If you are not using a cover, then you will be washing the comforter at least once a week to keep it clean. For larger comforters, it is safer to use the industrial size washing machines at your local laundromat.

5. The Mattress Covers

The mattress cover is a great way to extend the overall life of the mattress. The cover protects the mattress from contaminants penetrating the surface of the mattress, keeping it clean and fresh smelling longer.

Wash the mattress cover at least once a month to make certain staining doesn't occur on the mattress surface. Treat spills or stains after you remove the cover, then wash according to directions on the tag.

6. Curtains, Canopies, and Bed Skirts

Bed shirts, curtains, and canopies are more decorative than they are functional. They should not get dirty that often, so washing them every few months will do fine if you do not suffer from any type of allergies.
If no one in the house suffers from allergies, washing these decorative pieces twice a year will be fine. Pay close attention to the washing instruction label to avoid colors from fading and damaging the fabric.

Wash your bedding according to this guide and your room will look and smell fresh all year long. The biggest advantage to cleaning your bedding regularly is you eliminate the chance liquids can penetrate the mattress and lead to mold growth.

Cleaning your bedding on a regular basis is good for you and the mattress alike
